What are Daily Living Skills?
Daily living skills are the everyday tasks that people do to take care of themselves at home, school, work, and in the community. Developing age appropriate daily living skills increase the likelihood of having positive adult outcomes in work, college, independent living, and quality of life. Daily living skills are categorized into the areas of Personal, Domestic, and Community.
Personal
Self-care and hygiene tasks (e.g., showering, brushing teeth, changing clothes, putting on deodorant) and managing healthcare (e.g., taking medications, caring for cuts and injuries, making doctor appointments)
Domestic
Doing laundry, cleaning (e.g., vacuuming, taking out the trash), cooking (e.g., using appliances, making snacks and meals), and household maintenance (e.g., changing lightbulbs, making home repairs)
Community
Navigating the community (e.g., going grocery shopping), transportation (e.g., driving or taking a bus, using a map), and managing money (e.g., saving, spending, and budgeting, paying bills)
What is STRW?
Surviving and Thriving in the Real World (STRW) is an intervention that was developed for autistic teens that targets the development of age appropriate daily living skills including hygiene and self-care, cleaning, laundry, cooking, grocery shopping, and money management. STRW consists of 15 weekly sessions that are held via telehealth (e.g., Zoom). Each week, caregivers attend a group session and both the teen and their caregiver attend a dyad session so that new daily living skills can be practiced in the home.

Does the STRW Intervention Work?
Our team has completed a series of research studies on the STRW intervention in autistic teens. The results of these studies have consistently shown that adolescents gain an average of 2-4 years in Personal, Domestic, and Community daily living skills after completing the STRW intervention. The most gains are seen in Domestic skills (e.g., cooking, cleaning, laundry), but teens also make improvements in Personal skills (e.g., showering, putting on deodorant, taking medications) and Community skills (e.g., grocery shopping, saving money, budgeting for expenses).
These clinically significant and meaningful gains in developing and mastering age appropriate daily living skills after receiving the STRW intervention may facilitate a more successful transition from high school to the adult world.
Neurodivergent adolescents (e.g., teens with diagnoses such as autism and ADHD) who have challenges in acquiring age appropriate daily living skills would likely benefit from the STRW intervention.
